Not Thinking

My teacher told me I should loosen up so one night last week I got drunk and just started throwing stuff on a canvas without thinking. This was the end result. It feels good to not worry about what you're making or what its gonna look like. I might try and come up with a drawing and use this as the background.

Next Project

My next big project is making a new sign for my dads garage, "Benner's Auto Service'. Heres the current sign. I think I can top it.

Parents

This winter break I'm trying to experiment more and use alot of different mediums to hopefully expand my ideas. I found some goucache in my bedroom today so I decided to do some really simple portraits of my parents.

Traps

On Thanksgiving I went up with my dad to our hunting camp and did this still life focused on trapping and hunting. I really enjoy doing still life's with oil paint and I've been wanting to tackle one with my illustration process. Enjoy.

Self Portrait

"Self Portrait 2010"

I realized I hadn't done a worthy self portrait yet this year so here is my answer to that. After I finished this piece I realized it does represent some inner conflict I've had recently about my artistic process. While I'm primarily a digital artist I miss oil painting. I just haven't had the time for it. I'm also being pulled towards really simplified design work focused around the mysterious Black Square. This is me at the crossroads of all that deep thought.

In other news I revamped the website today. I updated the portfolio and added a short bio, artists statement and resume. That professional artist class is turning out to be helpful after all.

Its gonna be awesome, be there. They'll probably be food (I'm hoping).

Is China Reading Your Email?

I wanted to do a quick illustration for a video that was on CNN. The title is really fear mongering so I thought it deserved a bold image to go with it.

Victory Park

Its time to debut the comic book I've started working on called 'Victory Park'. I won't be posting all the pages online because I'd like people to get the full version in print when I'm done. However I do want to share the first two pages to give people a taste of the story. These pages are not fully complete as I plan on adding some shading and possibly color.

Seagulls

Last year me and my friend Leon Doucette recorded a few songs as Mitch Thunder and the War Machine. I thought I had posted them all on youtube but I forgot about this one, our epic...Seagulls. I've also been working on some more music which may get posted in the near future. I wish I knew someone who could rap over my new tracks. Any ideas?

Three Collages

'Dimensional Shark'

'That Man?'

'Moon Car'

Here's the other three collages I made for Art Attack. For these I was experimenting with using spray paint for the ground and then collaging on top of that. Because it was so cold out when I painted them I carried them back into my dorm inside newspaper which rubbed off some of the paint and gave some funky texture to them. Next time I might be a bit more purposeful with this idea.

Jon Stewart and Bill O'reilly

This is my new double portrait from Senior Studio featuring Jon Stewart and Bill O' Reilly. They just had another round of debate as they interviewed each other on their respective shows last month. I figured this would be a good time to unveil the picture as he just had Obama on his show and he's gearing up for his rally to restore sanity tomorrow. Enjoy.

Phish Poster for Manchester, NH

Tomorrow, October 26, Phish is coming to the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, NH. I always loved their trippy posters so I thought I would make my own for the show. Don't ask why this fish is hanging out in a pile of leaves, just enjoy it.

I received a cease and desist order from phish not to sell the poster as originally shown because it featured their band name. This new version doesn't have the ticket stub or any mention to phish and has been deemed ok. If you would like a ticketless version please shoot me an email at aaronmitchellart@gmail.com. They are still 5 dollars.

ART ATTACK

Yesterday was Art Attack. I had a bunch of my comics and other drawings for sale as well as some new collages, two of which are pictured below. I did these new ones on illustration board and laid down a spray paint ground before I started collaging on top. I also did blind contour portraits, one of which is posted here. I charged a dollar piece and they were quite a hit. Probably more so because I looked like a creeper staring the person in the eyes as I blindly drew them. Overall it was awesome and next time it happens make sure to be there.

Piper / Walk to School

'Piper'

'Walk to School'

Occasionally when I do collage I have a really good idea for mixing two elements together, in these two cases, mixing black and white photos with a simple texture or color. I then sit and sort through all my stuff and am totally lost for what else I should add. I eventually give up and let the piece sit until I pick it up down the road and flip through my photos again still finding nothing. I've been sitting on these two collages for awhile and I think its time to just call them finished. Sometimes all you need is a simple collage.
